About feng-shui and art

Wind and water. These two natural elements should also be evident in the art that surrounds us. Good art often echoes the patterns of nature - the curve of landscapes, the flow of wind, the movement of water - as it balances these universal forces with the man-made products of culture and history, which also affect our destiny. In other words, good art and good feng-shui can be almost synonymous. Many of the old feng-shui masters in China were artists, just as many of today’s artists put into practice what the old feng-shui masters thought.

Mai Cheng is not only a painter, but also a feng-shui master. Her paintings are designed to bring its surroundings in agreement and balance with powerful universal forces. When art spreads qi (positive energy) in a room, it helps counter architectural faults and possible "dead zones" in a building.

When your surroundings are in harmony, so are you. This is why feng-shui in art is just as important as feng-shui in architecture and furnishing. The colours of a painting will influence the light frequency that is reflected in a room, and the light frequency may in turn influence the qi, which determines how you feel.

Large livingroom decorated with paintingA painting by Mai Cheng usually comprises contrasts between something large and small, something near and far away - contrasts not only in perspectives, but also in colours. A warm colour will always balance a cold one, something heavy will offset something light, something sweet be neutralized by something sour. Only when two opposite forces are acting together, do we get energy. Electricity, for instance, but also good art. Feng-shui is based on this balance between yin and yang, which represent the positive and the negative.

In every painting she creates, Mai Cheng uses this ancient knowledge of contrasting colours, of composition and space, of placing and balance in accordance with the theories of yin and yang.

Another distinctive feature of her art is the use of letters and symbols. Calligraphic signs and rock carvings shine like hidden messages through the surface - like the painting's unconsciousness, leading us from the ancient cultures backwards to the prehistoric cave paintings and the archetypes which represent our common heritage. Every sign is an utterance from history, a statement with its own meaning. The signs bear testimony to abundance and joy, they symbolize living objects in motion, animals and humans, tools and work which all contribute to the qi that her paintings project on their environment.
